Mycenaean tholos tombs cemetery at Pellana
Prefectural Administration of Lakonia
A number of tholos (bee hive) tombs have been found at the spot of Spelies or Pelekiti, near today’s village of the same name. The largest is a royal tomb, with a tholos diameter of 10 m and dating to around 1500 BC. To the right and left of this large tomb are two smaller ones, located symmetrically in relation to the large one. The dimensions of the large tomb and the many splendid finds (gold sheeting and leaves, amphorae, alabaster artefacts, pottery) testify that Pellana was a centre of power, whilst the styles of the finds indicate that they cover a broad period (1500-1200 BC).
