Captain Zacharias Barbitsiotis

Prefectural Administration of Lakonia

Captain Zacharias Barbitsiotis

He was born in 1759 in the mountain village of Barbitsa in the Municipality of Oinounta, Lacedaemonos. From a small child he joined a band of klephts (bandits) to avenge the murder of his father and brother, and can be seen as a precursor to the 1821 War of Independence. He was gifted with exceptional physical and spiritual qualities, and attempted to unify the armed groups of all Greece against the Turks. He became the Commander of the Peloponnese, with Theodore Kolokotronis as his second-in-command. This legendary hero was treacherously murdered, and by a Greek (a family friend of Koukeas), at Tseria in Mani in 1805.
