Central Public Library of Sparta

The Central Public Library of Sparta opened in 1973, with the donation by the Municipality of Sparta of the approximately 3,000 books from the Municipal Library. The Library moved to its new building in 1989, built by the Ministry of Culture after a proposal by the Municipality of Sparta, on land donated to the Municipality by Evangelos Philippopoulos. The Library operates according to professional library principles, as established by the Operating Regulations for Greek Public Libraries and the UNESCO declaration. The Library sections open to the public are: Laconian bibliography section, Nikephoros Vrettakos Archive, lending and open shelf for adults’ and children’s libraries, Public Information Centre, Audiovisual Section, with CDs and DVDs, foreign books section and American corner, Newspapers and Magazines section, with an important collection of Laconian newspapers and magazines, and magazines on various subjects.
