The Museum of the Olive and Greek Oil
Prefectural Administration of Lakonia
Created by the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation at Sparta (address: Othonos St and 129 Amalias St) with the purpose of showing the historical development of the olive, olive oil and olive oil production in Greece and the Mediterranean, from prehistory until today. A presentation is given of the role of olive oil in diet, cosmetics, pharmaceutical use, lighting, etc. There is an exhibition of fossilised olive tree leaves 50,000-60,000 years old, found in the caldera at Santorini. Emphasis has been given to presenting technological developments in olive oil production, from antiquity until the early industrial period (wooden press, animal-powered, steam-powered, petroleum-powered and the electric oil press). There is also a presentation on the development of soap production, from the homemakerís cauldron to industrial production.
