The Menelaion [at ancient Therapne]
Prefectural Administration of Lakonia
The Menelaion was located in ancient Therapne, on a hill 5 km southeast of today’s Sparta, dedicated to Menelaus and Helen of Troy. This was a temple built on a tall base where, tradition and Pausanias hold, Menelaus and Helen were buried. Finds from excavations (inscribed shards and bronze items, as well as a stele) testify that this site was a place of worship for Menelaus and Helen. The sanctuary ruins, which survive today, are impressive and date to the classical period.
