Ancient city of Boeae

Prefectural Administration of Lakonia

Ancient city of Boeae
Ancient city of Boeae

Located on the site of today’s Neapolis Vion, and opposite today’s Elafonisos, which in antiquity was called “Oinou Gnathos” (Donkey Jaw). One of the Lacedaemonians’ most important ports, it was raided by the Athenians several times during the Peloponnesian War. It belonged (from 146 BC) to the Peloponnesian League, and later (22 BC) to the League of Free Laconians. Traces of the buildings of the old city have been discovered, with statues and inscriptions from the Roman period.
