Ancient city of Croceae

Prefectural Administration of Lakonia

Ancient city of Croceae

To the southeast of todays Krokees, at the site of Krikela was the ancient city of Croceae, known for its quarries that produced the celebrated stone of Croceae (marmor Lacedaemonium), used to decorate monuments, palaces, churches, etc. In Pausanias time (AD 170) there was a stone statue of Zeus of Croceae and a bronze group of the Dioscuri. A marble relief of the Dioscuri (Roman period) has been found at the old Croceae stone quarry, and has now been placed in the fountain of the village square (see photograph).
