Ancient city of Croceae
Prefectural Administration of Lakonia
To the southeast of today’s Krokees, at the site of Krikela was the ancient city of Croceae, known for its quarries that produced the celebrated stone of Croceae (marmor Lacedaemonium), used to decorate monuments, palaces, churches, etc. In Pausanias’ time (AD 170) there was a stone statue of Zeus of Croceae and a bronze group of the Dioscuri. A marble relief of the Dioscuri (Roman period) has been found at the old Croceae stone quarry, and has now been placed in the fountain of the village square (see photograph).
