Close to the river Lousios and the ruins of the ancient Gortyna, lies the picturesque village of Atsicholos with its stone houses. The village lies in a privileged position and offers a magnificent view of the region. Stone masons from Lagkadia, built the church of the village, Agios Athanasios. Adjacent to the temple is a domed fountain. Easily accessible from the village is the ancient Gortyna, the Monastery of Kalami and Byzantine and medieval monuments. Only 2 km outside the village on the way to Ancient Gortys, is the Venetian arched bridge of Polygenis Kokkoris. Next to it is the mill of Kokkoris (only the large mill stones are saved) and the Byzantine church of Agios Andreas. The church is built with ancient building material, probably from a Roman building. The church dates from the 12th century. Nowadays, Atsicholos is the basis for alternative tourism activities such as raftttıng, monoraft-hot dog, hydrospeed, rappel, etc., but also trekking through amazing nature.
