Dimitsana lies at an altitude of 1000 m and is the base of the municipality. It is one of the most picturesque villages of Greece with a rich history and tradition. This is a particularly popular destination and that is why there is developed touristic infrastructure. The view from the village is astounding, since one can distinguish the plain of Megalopolis and Mount Taigetos. The village is a traditional settlement, as it has wonderful stone houses and mansions, cobbled streets, old churches and many other attractions. The area has been inhabited since ancient times. In ancient times there was a settlement called ancient Tefthis. Dimitsana was founded in the 7th or 8th century A.D. on the ruins of the ancient town and is one of the oldest settlements in Arcadia. It is the birthplace of great historical figures, including Paleon Patron Germanos and Patriarch Gregory the 5th whose busts are in the village. The residence of the Patriarch is renovated and belongs to the ecclesiastical museum. The collection of the museum is particularly remarkable with vestments, sacred vessels, icons, crosses, and other objects (Tel +302795031217). In the famous library of Dimitsana one can find rare editions, manuscripts, historical records and archaeological finds from the region. The library was founded in 1764 by monks of the monastery of Philosophou with books from the monastery while running ecclesiastical school. It was one of the most famous libraries in Greece, but during the revolution many books were ruined as the paper was used for wrapping cartridges. Fortunately many books were rescued and can been seen today, together with various archaeological findings from the area. Churches in Dimitsana are also unique for their architecture and beauty. It is definitely worth visiting the churches of Agia Paraskevi, Agios Efthimios, Agios Georgios, Agios Ioannis, and Agioi Taxiarches. Also, there are several beautiful old mansions (i.e. Xeniou and Kazakou).

Dimitsana experienced prosperity specifically during the 18th due to the operation of many water mills in the area around Lousios river. There were several industries, such as leather and gunpowder mills, and mills for the production of flour. In the years of the revolution the gunpowder mills of Dimitsana supplied the insurgents with gunpowder. Today, in Agios Ioannis (Kefalari) at the outskirts of the village, there is a water power museum. There used to be more than 100 buildings along the river some of witch have been restored and belong to the museum . The extensive exploitation of water power in the region began to appear in the 16th century. It is worth visiting the flour mill, the tannery, the powder mill, the home of a miller, and the arack boiler of a tannery (tel +302795031630).

Dimitsana, is a perfect location for exploring the surrounding area. With the development of alternative forms of tourism, the village offers sports activities in the gorge of Lucios, such as climbing, rafting, canoeing, kayaking. There are paths that connect the village with the ancient town of Gortyna, and the famous monasteries of the region (Monastery of Aimialon, Monastery of John the Baptist, and Monastery of Philosophou). It is also worth tasting the local products. Dimitsana organises a festival on the 7 / 7.
