Dimitra is a small picturesque village at the foothills of Mount Afrodisio. It got its name from the goddess Demeter (Dimitra), which in ancient times was worshipped there. A sanctuary was dedicated to the goddess, whose ruins have survived till today. In Paleopolis, located just outside the village, ruins of an ancient building are preserved. The village is built around the gorge of Ladonas close to the artificial lake. The beautiful stone houses are fine examples of arcadian mountainous architecture. The church of St. Nikolaos is remarkable with its steeple and the wonderful murals. A few kilometers outside Dimitra stands the Monastery of Panagia Kleivokas. The monastery is built on a rock and is among the best-known in the region. Dimitra is a very good base for exploring the surrounding region, walks into the gorge of Ladona and sports in the artificial lake.
