The village of Kamenitsa is built over the river Mylaonta. The area has signs of habitation from the Neolithic period, since near the village (Sakovouni hill) a settlement from this period has been found. The village was inhabited until the late Mycenaean times, as archaeological findings indicate. Some archaeologists have identified this place as the ancient city Enispi, mentioned by Homer, which participated in the Trojan War. Near the entrance of the village (Panagia area) there is a cave with Neolithic findings such as bones and pottery. At the area of Agia Sotira there are remnants of an ancient settlement, possibly of ancient Torthynio and parts of medieval fortifications are also found in the areas of Avisaina and Kastro. The widest area is ideal for hiking and unique for the almost 11-hour walk from Kamenitsa to Vitina, along the river Mylaonta since it passes through several monasteries, bridges and old water mills.
