The road from Sitaina to Kastanitsa

Kastanitsa is one of the most beautiful villages of Tsakonia and of the entire Arcadia, and is perched on the slopes of Mount Parnonas at an altitude of 900 metres. The landscape around the village is magical with a rich chestnut forest. Due to the production of lime in the area, the village houses are painted white, have arched roofs and colourful shutters. The special colour and traditional architecture, has resulted in the identification of the village as the traditional village. The first reference to the village is in Byzantine times (9th century AD). It is considered the oldest village in Tsakonia and keeps traditions, along with the tsakoniki dialect alive. The age of the buildings is also reflected by their construction. The traditional houses are mansions, with high walls and closed courtyards, in order to maximize protection of the residents. For the protection of residents, Kastanitsa had a castle and the surrounding area was fortified (Byzantine tower, castle of Koutoutus, etc.). Some of the remains of these buildings are still preserved. At the church of Metamorphosis (18th century) the visitor can admire the wood carvings with the icons donated to a villager by Catherin the great of Russia. The area is ideal for hiking tours and explorations. The pathways through the gorges of Parnonas are unique. The chapels of the village are worth visiting (eg Agios Panteleimon) as is the adjacent monastery of Agios Nicholas Kontolinas. In Kastanitsa each year a large variety of cultural events such as the cultural fortnight (1-15/8), the festival of mid-August and the celebration of Chestnut (last weekend of October) are organised.
