Likosoura today is a small village of Megalopolis, with a beautiful old church. In ancient times was the sacred city of Arcadians and according to Pausanias is the oldest city in the world. The town was built near the present village, on Mount Lykeo where Despina was worshiped, connected with primordial goddess cults, and was known only by the initiated. It is hoped that this godess was Persephone, but it was referred as Despina. The sanctuary area was strewn with altars (Despina, Demeter, Hippius Poseidon, etc), sanctuary (Despina, Panos, Athena), statues of gods, baths, sacred fountain, the grove of Despina and the palace of the deity. The Likosoura was the site of intimate rituals, and that is reflected by their symbolism in archaeological findings.
Today, only few ruins have remained, as the excavation was not completed. The visitor can see parts of the walls (4th - 5th century BC), remnants of the newer sanctuary Despina (2nd century BC), portions of Demeterís and Despinaís altars, building group, and parts of the mansion and the Goddess Parts of the sacred fountain (2nd century BC.). Within the archaeological park thereís a small archaeological museum. That kept finds from the excavation, and copies of statues, because the most important have been transferred to the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. It is worth mentioning to the familiar Damofonta constitution, which is a cluster of giant statues. The complex was placed in the sanctuary of Despina and presented Demeter, Despina, Artemis and Titan Anyto (in the first half of the 2nd century BC). Pausanias mentions that for their manufacture had been used Dolianon marble and marble from the area of the sanctuary, following instructions sent by the gods with a dream. The length of the cluster was 8.4m its height was 6m (including pedestal). Likosoura today is a small village of Megalopolis, with a beautiful old church. In the ancient times, but was the sacred city of Arcadians and according to Pausanias the oldest city in the world. The town was built near the present village, on Mount Lykaio. There Despina was worshiped and perissoter Kryoneri, is a small village of Gortinias mentioned for the first time in the late 17th century AC. An ancient road once crossed the district and connected Sparta with Heraea. Few parts of that road are still saved in the village since symbolism, since holding objects for mystical ceremonies. Although the residents of Lykosoura did not participate in the colonization of ancient Megalopolis, Megalopolis mint coins with a representation of the Constitution of Damofonta around the end of 2nd BC Century. The museum is open daily, except Mondays, 8.30 am -- 3.00 pm (Tel 27240 81267). Also above the ancient city are the remains of the castle of St. George of Skorton. The castle was founded on years of the Franks. Today, along with the remains of walls of the fort the church of St. George is preserved.
