The acropolis of the ancient city of Epidaurus Limeras

Prefectural Administration of Lakonia

The acropolis of the ancient city of Epidaurus Limeras

Located in the region of Ayios Ioannis in Monemvasia, on a hill and near the coast. The impressive walls were most probably built in the 4th century BC. Pausanias states that the inhabitants of this city originated from Epidaurus in the Argolid. The finds from the limited excavations testify to human activity in the area from the prehistoric period. It was the most important city in the area in the classical period, and was destroyed twice by the Athenians during the Peloponnesian War. It belonged (from 146 BC) to the Peloponnesian League, and later (22 BC) to the League of Free Laconians, along with 24 other Laconian cities.
