Alfeios River

University of Peloponnisos

Alfeios is the biggest river of Peloponnese. It crosses almost all Ancient Arcadia and disgorges near the gulf of Kuparissia (near dried Avgoulinitsa lake). Two of its most well-known confluents are Ladonas and Erimanthos. According to mythology Alfeios (Alpheus) was the son of Okeanos (Ocean) and Tithias. In Arcadia and Ilida he was worshiped as the god who gives wealth. There are many myths about Alfeios. One of them mentions that once he loved Artemis, but she didnít want him and every time she saw him she spread mud on her face in order for him not to recognise her.
