Castle of Mouchli

University of Peloponnisos

On the hill of Mouchli, just outside the village of Agiorgitika, there are few remains of the Byzantine castle city of Mouchli. The city was built in the 13th century by the General Andronikos Asan, and was one of the major cities of Peloponnese equivalent to Monemvasia and Mystras. The city and the castle were destroyed by the troops of Mohammed the Conqueror (15th century), but were later rebuilt. During the Ottoman era, it was an important centre of the region. In the castle city was the church of Panagia Mouchliotissa, built in the late 13th century. Today some remains of the columns of the church remain.
