Professions that have been lost
Municipality of Argos
There are a significant number of professions, which have died out and vanished during the past 50 years. The technological evolution pushed coach-repairers, saddle-makers or farriers out of the limelight. Changes in habits and fashion made Ellinoraptes (tailors) and sandalopoious (shoe-makers) useless. Finally, changes in every-day life or the laws that were in effect abolished pannier makers, arm repairers and “tax –lodgers” (people quthorized to collect taxes).
In Argos in 1916 all the professions named above flourished together with others, which have remarkably shrunk, but have not died out. For example there were 56 wine selling stores and 35 groceries, a number which is probably big for a city of 8.828 inhabitants.
