The shoe shiners of Argos
Municipality of Argos
They were called “loustroi”, “stilvotides” from the verb “loustraro”- “stlvono” which means shine. They were people of god and labor, who tried to gain their daily bread with a few drachmas, shining people’s shoes with their brushes and chests. But they were honest professionals of everyday labor. They were found in squares of all Greek cities. As Edelweiss in Mountain tops of the Alps, like wild flowers in the fields of Greek countryside, in the middle of the winter, without a lee, being hit by the cold north wind and by the winter’s sharp morning cold.
