Yannis Ritsos. The house where he was born in Monemvasia

Yannis Ritsos was born in Monemvasia in May 1909, to a local noble family. He lost his brother and his mother to tuberculosis, and finally he himself suffered from the same illness. His first collection of poetry, with the title “Tractor” was published in 1934. This was followed by many poetry collections, essays, prose and translations of poems. In 1956 he was awarded the first state poetry for his work “Moonlight Sonata.” He was also awarded many international prizes, including the Lenin Peace Prize. The philosophy schools of the Universities of Thessaloniki and Athens and many universities abroad awarded him an honorary doctorate. He died in 1990 and was buried in the cemetery of Monemvasia.
