Ancient city of Karyae

Prefectural Administration of Lakonia

Located on the site of today’s Community of the same name. This market town was known in antiquity for its annual festivals in honour of Artemis Karyatis. During this festival, the virgins of the town and all the other Lacedaemonian towns would dance local dances in honour of the goddess. In the 8th century AD, the town was renamed Arachova; in 1929 it adopted the ancient name of Karyae once more.
