Agios Andreas

University of Peloponnisos

In the wider region of Tsakonia lies the town of Agios Andreas built on the edge of Zarmpanitsas gorge at the estuary of the river Vrasiati. On the road that follows the Vrasiati river to the beach of Agios Andreas there is an arched bridge and also the Evangelistria Monastery. The two buildings of the monastery, a church and a tower, appear to be Venetian, which were probably renovated in the 18th century. The monastery belongs to the monastery of Orthokostas. At the beach of Agios Andreas, a part of the Cyclopian wall of ancient Anthini has survived, together with parts of towers from the 4th and 5th century BC. Remains from the late Roman and Byzantine period of Anthini are located a short distance from the ancient site, near the sea. In Agios Andreas many traditional celebrations take place, such as the Feast of Agios Georgios, Ypapanti, Agion Apostolon, and Konstantinou & Helen.
