Temple of Artemis Knakeatidos

University of Peloponnisos

Outside Vervena village there are ruins of the Temple of Artemis Knakeatidos where she was worshipped since the 8th century BC. The temple was built in the 6th century. It is believed that this was the first Greek temple entirely built with marble. The temple of Artemis Knakeatidos was of Doric style and had a large statue of the goddess, a part of which has survived. The temple is mentioned by Pausanias in Arcadika.
