Monastery of Panagia Orthokostas

University of Peloponnisos

It is basically a complex of two monasteries founded in the 10th and the 17th century respectively. The monastery was burned down by Ibrahim and was renovated in the 19th century. Today, the monastery houses sacred relics and historical archives of the 18th century. During the Byzantine period the icon of Virgin Mary Orthokostas, believed to be made by Luke the Evangelist, was kept there. When Peloponnese fell to the Ottomans, the icon was moved for protection to Nafplio which was held by the Venetians. Today the icon is in Venice.
