Loutra Iraias and ancient city
Loutra Iraias, fatherland of the famous director Kostas Gavras is a well known and popular destination, due to the hot springs of the region. The municipal baths provide high quality services. The baths operate during the summer months (15 / 6 to 15/10, tel +302797025000). The water is rich in sulphur and is appropriate fior curing numerous diseases. In the village there is excellent tourist infrastructure. The area of Iraia seems to have been inhabited from the Mycenaean times as the excavation of a tomb shows. The tomb is large (about 7 square meters) and contained parts of bones, grave gifts, pottery, bronze pieces of clothing and tools. The dating of these objects is from 1400 to 1200 BC. The city of ancient Iraia was also in this area. In the ancient city were 2 temples of Dionysus, a temple dedicated to god Pan, and the sacred temple of Hera. The city was a member of the Arcadian Federation and later of the Achaian Confederacy. Some ruins of the ancient city can be seen today. The hot springs were also used by the Romans. Later the city was gradually abandoned.
