In ancient times the area above the village was called Kritea. According to Arcadian tradition, god Zeus was born there (and not on the island of Crete). Recent excavations at Lykaio Mountain, have brought to light objects showing that the worship of Zeus started from 3000 BC. In Kritea, according to Pausanias, was the important temple of Apollo. The sanctuary has been found outside the village in the church of Agios Ioannis. The church seems to have been built on the location of the ancient temple with ancient building materials. The ancient settlement of Vasilida is believed to be in the area between the village and Alfeios river. When Pausanias passed by Vasilida, the village was ruined, but the sanctuary of Demeter still remained. The exact location of the ancient settlement is not yet known.
