Pheidon

Municipality of Argos

The eleventh of the Timenides, Pheidon, who reigned between 770-730 B.C., founded the first mint in Europe in Aegina, which belonged to the kingdom of Argos. He was the first to make a coin of silver and copper, defined standards and weights and expanded the state. It was then that Argos became the most important centre of metallurgy in Greece.
