Old Agiou Vassileiou church

Municipality of Argos

Old Agiou Vassileiou church, in the south east cemetery of the city.
It is a severe church of special architecture. The church is on a level lower than the one of its precinct. It was a cross-roofed church. Its roof was also arch-shaped, built with narrow lighting windows and walls made of huge raw stones.
Churches of this type are of the late post-Byzantine period. Especially about Agios Vassileios, there is additional information that it was built by Itzet Beis for his Christian workers and servants. Nakim Beis, who was the last Administrator of Argos, was Itzet Beisís brother.
The church has gone through several posterior alterations like lodgements coatings and lime work.
