Municipality of Argos

The plain of Argos is very fertile due to its flows. In the ancient times this plain was a deep gap which gradually filled with soil from the surrounding mountains and took the form of a plain. But it is short of water that is why ancient writers gave it the name “polydipsion” and “anydron” (poly+dipsa= much thirst, an+ydor= without water). The hero Argos brought wheat from Libya. They honored, as it was natural, the goddess Demetra, whom they named “efpyros”, “pyroforos”, “filopyros”, and “livyssa”. All these names have to do with fire. Due to its fertility Argos was named by Homer “Outhar Arouris”, which means the earth’s breast from where all goods come.
Agriculture, and especially cultivation of horticultural products, still has the first place among wealth-producing sources of Argos.
The territory of Argos had big plottages of vinery and raisin-vinery, but due to mildew, glaciers and the fall of the price of raisin, the inhabitants turned their vineries to kitchen gardens.
The river Erasinos has contributed to the fertility of the land. The land of Argos is appropriate for the cultivation of various plants, such as tobacco, cotton, corn, legumes, olive trees, vineries, vegetables, citrus trees. That is why the Turks named Argos Little Misiri, which means Little Alexandreia.
To the end of the 19th century, tobacco cultivation was the choice of minor cultivators who asked for an increase of their income.
After the destruction of Asia Minor, Argos shows financial development. This development took place thanks to the habitation of emigrants as well as to the turning of the farmers of the Argolic plain to cultivation of vegetables, which supplied the Capital, which was extremely demanding due to the demographic circumstances.
Considering its size, one could say that the county of Argos is treeless. Only near to the Erasinos’s sources and around Lerni there are high trees and especially plane trees and poplars. On the surrounding mountains there are shrubs and olive groves. During the last few years the cultivation of citrus trees is developing a lot. Melons and citrus fruits from Argos are famous. Stockbreeding, small industry, industry and trade have significant place in the economy of the city.
Weaving mills and canneries have the first place among the factories. Among the population of the area, the 30% are grangers, 25% are professional handicraftsmen, 25% are workers, and 5% are scientists and 15% professionals of other sectors.
